José aids her escape after a brawl, deserts his post, and follows her to a mountain encampment of smugglers, where his obsession deepens and his moral restraints unravel. As Carmen tires of him and turns her affections toward the celebrated bullfighter Escamillo, José’s jealousy spirals toward tragedy. The drama culminates outside the bullring, where love, pride, and fate collide with fatal consequences. --- Background: Produced by Fox Film and directed by Raoul Walsh, the picture reunited Walsh with rising star Dolores del Río and was released on September 4, 1927. The film was originally tinted lavender, and later a 1928 release carried a synchronized musical score and effects amid the industry’s transition to sound. A modern restoration by the Museum of Modern Art and The Film Foundation drew on an export print preserved in the Czech archive, as domestic prints are not known to survive. --- Trivia: The entire feature was originally exhibited with a uniform lavender tint, an aesthetic common in late silent-era presentations. A synchronized-score version was prepared and released in 1928, using both sound-on-disc and sound-on-film processes. The MoMA restoration was reconstructed from an export version preserved by the National Film Archive of the Czech Republic. The sound version featured the theme “Estrellita” by Mexican composer Manuel M. Ponce, arranged by George P. Hulten with English lyrics by George Gibson Davis. The New York State Archives index lists the Fox submission at approximately 9,000 feet, consistent with nine reels for standard exhibition. --- Public Domain / Rights: Original Release: September 4, 1927.
