Summary:
Pietro “Beppo” Donnetti, a gondolier in Venice, leaves for New York to make his fortune and marry Annette Ancello. Reunited in America, they marry and start a family, but harsh tenement conditions and political exploitation test their hopes.
When their infant falls ill during a heat wave, Beppo’s desperate attempt to obtain pasteurized milk is thwarted by theft and arrest. Grief drives him toward vengeance against a local ward boss, but a final moment of compassion leads to a quiet, elegiac resolution.
