Summary:
In 18th-century Russia, Lt. Vladimir Dubrovsky attracts the attention of Czarina Catherine II after a daring roadside rescue. When he refuses her advances, he is marked as a fugitive and returns home to find his family dispossessed by the powerful nobleman Kyrilla Troekouroff.
Vowing to seek justice, Vladimir adopts the masked persona of the Black Eagle and wages a campaign against oppression. His resolve is tested when he infiltrates Troekouroff’s household as a tutor and falls in love with Mascha, the nobleman’s daughter. The story balances romance, revenge, and questions of honor as Vladimir faces the Czarina’s power and his own conscience.
