McGowan Studio: Robertson-Cole Pictures Corporation Starring: James Pierce, Dorothy Dunbar, Edna Murphy, Harold Goodwin, Frederick Peters, Boris Karloff Based on: Tarzan and the Golden Lion by Edgar Rice Burroughs Release Date: March 20, 1927 Runtime: 57 minutes Format: Silent, black-and-white, 1.33:1; 6 reels Country: United States Language: Silent Genres: Adventure, Action --- Chapters: 00:00:00 Greystoke estate and arrivals 00:11:30 Ambush on the trail 00:23:00 Toward the City of Diamonds 00:36:30 Temple of the lion-god 00:49:30 Rescue and reckoning --- Summary: At his African estate, Lord Greystoke—Tarzan—awaits the arrival of Jane and her niece, Ruth, when the unscrupulous trader Esteban Miranda attacks their caravan. A fugitive from a hidden “City of Diamonds” reveals its riches and rites, prompting Esteban to kidnap Ruth and force a march to the lost city. Tarzan and his companion lion, Jad-bal-ja, pursue the captors into the city, where Ruth faces sacrifice to a lion deity. Using a secret passage to reach the temple precincts, Tarzan intervenes, slays the lion-god, and thwarts Esteban, restoring order before returning to the Greystoke domain. --- Background: Filming occurred in late 1926 for FBO/Robertson-Cole, with cinematography by Joseph Walker. Long considered lost, the film was later rediscovered in a complete print in the 1990s. It marked James Pierce’s only screen portrayal of Tarzan; he later married Edgar Rice Burroughs’s daughter and voiced Tarzan on radio in 1932–1936. --- Trivia: Boris Karloff appears in an early role as Owaza, years before his later stardom. Joseph Walker, the cinematographer here, went on to collaborate frequently with Frank Capra on films such as It Happened One Night and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. For decades the feature was believed lost until a complete print surfaced in the 1990s. The production was released in six reels, standard 35mm, at the academy ratio of 1.33:1. --- Public Domain / Rights: Original Release: March 20, 1927 Original Studio / Distributor: Robertson-Cole Pictures Corporation / Film Booking Offices of America Copyright Status: Public Domain --- Hashtags: Tarzan PublicDomain SilentFilm Adventure 1927 EdgarRiceBurroughs BorisKarloff ClassicCinema Source page: https: //commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tarzan_and_the_Golden_Lion_(1927).webm Direct media URL: https: //upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c0/Tarzan_and_the_Golden_Lion_%281927%29.webm
