When the coach persuades him to stay for the team, Barbara breaks off their plans and returns to New York. There she learns her real name is Barbara Pelham and that she has inherited Pelham University. Barbara assumes control of the campus and imposes strict academic standards that threaten the team’s prospects, while showman Tap-Tap Thompson and coed Helen Fry stir additional complications. As exams and the rivalry game approach, loyalties are tested, romances reshuffled, and the school’s fate hinges on both scholarship and sport. --- Background: Produced by Paramount Famous Lasky Corp., Sweetie was filmed in mid-1929 and released during the first wave of all-talking campus musicals. It premiered in New York on October 25, 1929 and opened nationwide on November 2, 1929. The picture used Movietone sound and was also issued in a silent version for theaters not yet wired for sound. Songs featured words by George Marion Jr. with music by Richard A. Whiting, characteristic of late-1920s collegiate musical comedies. --- Trivia: AFI lists the film’s genre as Musical with a college sub-genre, reflecting its campus setting and football storyline. The credited cinematographer was Alfred Gilks and the editor was Verna Willis, both frequent Paramount collaborators of the period. Jack Oakie performs the number “Alma Mammy” on screen, one of several songs written for the production. The New York premiere preceded general release by about a week, a common practice for studio showcases at the time. A silent version was prepared alongside the sound release to accommodate theaters still converting to sound. Production began in July 1929 and moved rapidly to meet the fall release date aligned with football season. --- Public Domain / Rights: Original Release: November 2, 1929 Original Studio / Distributor: Paramount Famous Lasky Corp.
