Summary:
In a Galician town near the Russian border, Lea Lyon, the daughter of Rabbi Mendel, meets Constantine, a Russian prince traveling in peasant disguise. When war brings occupation, Constantine returns as the commanding officer and orders Lea to submit to him, threatening to burn the town if she refuses.
Lea’s resistance gives way to a desperate choice to save her community. Moved by her courage, Constantine spares the town, setting off consequences that test loyalties, faith, and identity amid the turmoil of war.

Background:
Surrender adapts Sándor Bródy’s 1915 stage play Lea Lyon and was produced by Universal Pictures as a Universal-Jewel release. Working titles included Lea Lyon and The Crimson Hour. Cinematography was by Gilbert Warrenton, with editing by Edward L. Cahn. The film marked celebrated émigré star Ivan Mosjoukine’s only American feature appearance and saw a general release on March 4, 1927, followed by a New York opening on November 3, 1927.
---
Trivia:
Some materials and prints present the title as “Surrender!” with an exclamation point.
The production briefly carried the alternative title The Crimson Hour during development.
Surviving prints are held by the Library of Congress, Cineteca del Friuli, the Steven Spielberg Jewish Film Archive, and Library and Archives Canada.
The scenario is credited to Edward J. Montagne and Charles Kenyon, with intertitles by Albert De Mond.
The film was presented under Universal’s prestige “Universal-Jewel” banner.
