Summary:
A golf-obsessed shipping clerk, Jack Kelly, is invited to tutor his boss at an exclusive country club, where he falls for heiress Allie Monte. Jack’s bluffing about wealth, a jealous club champion, and shifting fortunes put their romance in jeopardy until a high-stakes tournament offers a path to reconciliation. Themes include class aspiration, sporting prowess as social leverage, and the tension between image and sincerity.

Background:
Produced and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Spring Fever adapts Vincent Lawrence’s 1925 Broadway play and marked the first onscreen romantic teaming of William Haines and Joan Crawford. Portions were filmed at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California. The film was later restored by Turner Entertainment in 2008 and aired on Turner Classic Movies, and the property was remade as the 1930 MGM musical Love in the Rough.
---
Trivia:
Location shooting at Riviera Country Club grounds the film’s golf sequences in a real Los Angeles-area course.
Intertitles were written by Ralph Spence, and settings were credited to Cedric Gibbons and David Townsend.
The picture was the first romantic pairing of MGM stars William Haines and Joan Crawford on screen.
Spring Fever was remade as Love in the Rough , shifting the silent romantic comedy into an early musical format.
