Summary:
At a struggling costume shop run by Otto Schmidt, the proprietor’s fixation on elaborate, impractical inventions puts the business on the brink of collapse. A young manager sent by creditors falls for Schmidt’s niece, while salesman Ted and a trio of hapless firemen orbit the chaos, setting up a chain of misunderstandings and slapstick set pieces.
Plans for a firemen’s ball and a scheme involving swapped identities culminate in an accidental apartment blaze. The fire brigade’s frantic response—and one of Schmidt’s contraptions—brings the crisis to a close and resolves the central romance.

Background:
Written by famed cartoonist Rube Goldberg, who also makes a cameo, the film is a pre-Code Fox production directed by Benjamin Stoloff. It marked the first feature appearance of Ted Healy and the trio who would become the Three Stooges—Shemp Howard, Moe Howard , and Larry Fine—bridging vaudeville traditions with early sound-era screen comedy.
---
Trivia:
This feature film debuted Ted Healy’s act with “His Stooges” Shemp Howard, Moe Howard, and Larry Fine, antecedents of the later Three Stooges.
Moe Howard is credited on-screen as “Harry Howard,” reflecting his given name and early billing.
Rube Goldberg not only wrote the story and screenplay but appears briefly on camera, tying the film’s gadget-driven gags to his popular inventions.
The score features songs by Cliff Friend and James Monaco, aligning the picture with early sound-era musical comedies.
Fox Film Corporation registered copyright for the film on August 16, 1930, under record LP1548.
The film includes an early recurring bit for the trio and a rare a cappella number performed with Shemp.
