Summary:
A famed Irish tenor, long retired to a quiet village, lives near the woman he once loved and the children she now struggles to raise. Circumstances compel him to resume his career, and his return to the concert stage is driven by loyalty, affection, and a desire to provide stability for the family.
As the singer tours America, events at home reshape his path. The story moves between performance and personal duty, using songs and rural settings to explore themes of devotion, sacrifice, and the ties of community.

Background:
Produced and released by Fox Film Corporation, the picture was directed by Frank Borzage and partly photographed on location in Ireland, including at Moore Abbey in County Kildare and in the village of Lusk, before completing production at Fox Movietone studios in Hollywood. It premiered in New York on March 11, 1930, with general U.S. release in September. The film was recorded in Fox Movietone sound and also photographed in the 70mm Fox Grandeur wide-gauge process, though the Grandeur version was never released. It features celebrated tenor John McCormack in a rare dramatic screen role and provides an early appearance for Maureen O’Sullivan.
---
Trivia:
The film was photographed both in standard 35mm and in 70mm Fox Grandeur; only the 35mm version was exhibited in theaters.
An alternate international version with silent intertitles and additional musical material was prepared for non-English-speaking markets.
John McCormack’s real-life accompanist, Edwin Schneider, appears on screen as the singer’s pianist.
Portions of the concert sequence were staged and filmed to showcase McCormack’s live performance style within the narrative.
Irish child actor Tom Clifford made his motion-picture debut in this production.
