Persuading her to abandon crime, Pat wagers he can return a stolen brooch without being caught, triggering a pursuit that draws police attention. Pat infiltrates gangster Quig Mundy’s operation by impersonating the Chicago Kid, tips off the police, and survives exposure when the real criminal appears. A final confrontation frees Faith from Mundy’s control, aided by an undercover Chinese agent working with the San Francisco police. --- Background: Produced by Hunt Stromberg and photographed by Sol Polito, Soft Shoes was the last in a Stromberg–Carey series and was distributed by Producers Distributing Corporation. Though set in San Francisco, production used Los Angeles locations, including the Bryson Apartments and the city’s old Chinatown; a stock shot of San Francisco Bay supplies the locale. --- Trivia: A tinted and toned restoration was created from the only known surviving 35mm nitrate print held by the Czech Republic’s Národní filmový archiv; new English intertitles were translated from the Czech titles. The restored version runs approximately 45 minutes at 20 fps and has music by Donald Sosin. Soft Shoes premiered in its new restoration at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival on May 31, 2018, at the Castro Theatre. Recognizable Los Angeles locations include the Bryson Apartments on Wilshire Boulevard; portions of old Chinatown also appear. Hank the dog and Pete the horse are credited among the cast, underscoring the film’s western roots despite its urban setting. --- Public Domain / Rights: Original Release: January 1, 1925.
