Summary:
On New Year’s Eve, a young man seeks guidance from his grandfather, Bishop Armstrong, about marrying an actress. The bishop recounts his own youthful romance with famed Italian opera star Rita Cavallini, unfolding the story in flashback. As their affair deepens, rumors about Rita’s patron, Cornelius Van Tuyl, and the pressures of class and reputation strain the relationship.
Despite genuine affection, the lovers confront irreconcilable differences between public image and private desire. Returning to the present, the bishop’s tale becomes a measured argument for following the heart, tempered by the cost of such choices in a world governed by propriety.

The story is adapted from Edward Sheldon’s successful 1913 stage play, which had also inspired a 1920 silent film starring Doris Keane.
MGM prepared both sound and silent versions; the sound release used the Movietone system, reflecting the transitional state of exhibition in 1930.
