Summary:
A naturalist, Mr. Garton, spends part of the winter in Funchal with his daughter Jenny. During an excursion to the highlands of Madeira, Jenny’s imagination transforms the dramatic landscape into a realm of myth and menace.
At the Rabaçal viewpoint she fixates on a long mountain tunnel as an entrance to the underworld and envisions the shelter’s guard as a faun. The film blends travelogue views of Madeira with a fantasy-tinged portrayal of fear, desire, and the power of suggestion.

Background:
Shot entirely on Madeira in 1926 by Empresa Cinegráfica Atlântida, the film was written, directed, and photographed by Manuel Luís Vieira and premiered on May 11, 1927, in Funchal. It is regarded as an early example of Portuguese fantastic cinema; scenes in its fourth chapter later drew the attention of censors in 1929. A digital restoration has been presented in recent years by the Cinemateca Portuguesa with support from the EEA Grants program.
