Summary:
Mickey arrives at Minnie’s house in a horse-drawn cart, only to be upstaged by Pete in a flashy automobile. After Pete’s car fails, Minnie goes with Mickey to a lively barn dance, but Mickey repeatedly steps on her feet and loses her favor. To win her back, he secretly uses a balloon to make himself “light on his feet,” briefly impressing Minnie until Pete exposes the trick. Minnie returns to dance with Pete, leaving Mickey alone as the short ends on a rare note of defeat for the character.

Background:
The Barn Dance is the third Mickey Mouse short and the first of twelve released in 1929, directed by Walt Disney with animation led by Ub Iwerks and music by Carl Stalling. Conceived as a sound cartoon, it showcases early Disney experiments in synchronized gags and musical rhythm; the recording used Pat Powers’ Cinephone system. The short is notable for portraying Pete as a courteous rival and for Minnie choosing him over Mickey, an uncommon outcome in later entries.
---
Trivia:
Walt Disney provided the voices for Mickey, Minnie, and Pete in this short.
A colorized version was prepared decades later, part of late-1980s colorizations of early Mickey shorts.
Technical references list the film at approximately 7:45, presented in 35mm, mono Cinephone, at about 1.37:1.
The short was an early 1929 release in the sound era, emphasizing dance and musical timing.
