Summary:
The Cisco Kid, a charismatic outlaw, outwits lawmen and captivates locals across the Arizona frontier. Sergeant Mickey Dunn pursues him relentlessly, while the Cisco Kid’s romance with Tonia Maria complicates loyalties on both sides.
When Tonia and Dunn conspire to capture the bandit, the Cisco Kid turns their scheme to his advantage, leading to a tragic misidentification and a wry, ironic resolution that underscores themes of betrayal, performance, and survival on the borderlands.

Background:
Initially planned and begun by Raoul Walsh—who withdrew after losing an eye in an on-set car accident—the production was completed by Irving Cummings. The film became a landmark early sound Western, noted as the first talkie filmed extensively outdoors and shot on location in Utah’s Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks as well as Mission San Juan Capistrano and the Mojave Desert.
---
Trivia:
Warner Baxter won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Cisco Kid at the 2nd Academy Awards held on April 3, 1930; the film also received nominations for Outstanding Picture, Directing, Writing, and Cinematography.
The film premiered in Los Angeles on December 25, 1928, followed by U.S. general release on January 20, 1929.
Its on-location production with synchronized sound helped demonstrate that all-talking features could be made outside studio stages.
The story adapts O. Henry’s 1907 “The Caballero’s Way,” introducing the Cisco Kid to sound-era audiences and shaping later screen iterations of the character.
