Summary:
On New York’s Lower East Side, Rabbi David Cominsky struggles to provide for his family as a pushcart peddler. He favors his studious elder son, Morris, who aims to become a lawyer, while discounting the loyalty of younger son Sammy, who secretly boxes under the name “Battling Rooney.”
When David pawns his overcoat to buy Morris a suit, illness and humiliation deepen the family rift. As Morris distances himself from his heritage and courts his employer’s daughter, Sammy’s rise in the ring forces a reckoning. The brothers’ confrontation ultimately leads to repentance, reconciliation, and renewed pride in family and tradition.
