Summary:
During the American Civil War, a suave Confederate spy named Jack races west to intercept gold promised to President Abraham Lincoln by a Nevada mine owner. Jack’s mission entangles him with the mine owner’s two daughters, hostile forces, and a string of perilous near-misses as he plots to divert the shipment.
The film blends Civil War adventure with brisk, sophisticated comedy, sending its antihero through satirical encounters with historical figures and ending on a wry note that lampoons romance, wartime heroics, and American myths.

Background:
Produced by Famous Players-Lasky and released by Paramount Pictures, Hands Up! teamed director Clarence G. Badger with comedian Raymond Griffith shortly after their collaboration on Paths to Paradise. Written by Monte Brice and Lloyd Corrigan from a story by Reggie Morris, the feature was issued in six reels and later recognized by the Library of Congress with selection to the National Film Registry in 2005 for its cultural and historical significance.
---
Trivia:
George A. Billings, known for portraying Abraham Lincoln on screen, appears here as Lincoln.
The cast features Noble Johnson as Sitting Bull and Charles K. French as Brigham Young, reflecting the film’s playful mix of real historical figures in a farcical plot.
AFI records the picture at 5,883 feet across six reels, corresponding to a 70-minute runtime.
The film’s French release title was Raymond s’en va-t-en guerre.
A print has circulated among archives and collectors, and the film has been screened at silent film festivals in recent decades.
