Summary:
After her racketeer father is killed during a police operation, Rose Manning swears vengeance against Inspector “Butch” McArthur. Years later, working as a nightclub hostess with ties to bootlegger Chuck Gaines, she falls for Jimmy McArthur—unaware at first that he is the inspector’s son—forcing a choice between revenge and love as underworld rivalries erupt into violence.
As jealousy and gang machinations close in, Rose shields Jimmy from a murder plot while exposing the true killers, bringing her into uneasy alignment with the law and complicating her long‑nurtured desire for retribution. Themes of loyalty, forgiveness, and the pull between criminal and domestic worlds play out against a Prohibition‑era backdrop.

Background:
Produced and released by RKO during the pre-Code era, Framed began production in early December 1929 and reached theaters in March 1930. It was photographed by Leo Tover with RCA Photophone sound and circulated in a seven‑reel, black‑and‑white release. AFI records also note an alternate working title, Playing the Market, and a Providence premiere on March 15, 1930, followed by a New York opening on May 2, 1930.
---
Trivia:
The film’s “William Holden” is a veteran character actor , unrelated to the later Academy Award–winning star of the same name.
AFI lists an alternate title for the project—Playing the Market—used during production.
AFI catalogs the release as seven reels, totaling approximately 6,138 feet, recorded using RCA Photophone.
According to TV Guide’s cast listing, Joel McCrea appears uncredited in a bit role as a waiter.
RKO scheduled a Providence, Rhode Island premiere on March 15, 1930, before wider U.S. playdates, with a New York opening on May 2, 1930.
