Summary:
In a modern spin on the Cinderella tale, small-town drudge Ella Cinders endures the cruelty of her stepmother and stepsisters while dreaming of the movies. A local “Find a Star” contest sends her to Hollywood, where she discovers the scheme was a fraud. Undaunted, Ella sneaks onto studio lots and blunders into screen tests and staged scenes, her determination and comic ingenuity turning mishaps into opportunity.
With support from her suitor, iceman Waite Lifter, Ella’s perseverance earns her a contract and a shot at stardom. The film blends romantic comedy with Hollywood-in-Hollywood satire, celebrating resilience and show-business mythmaking.
---
Background:
Produced by John McCormick for John McCormick Productions and distributed by First National, Ella Cinders adapts the 1925–1961 newspaper strip by William M. Conselman and Charles Plumb. Filmed at First National’s West Coast facilities with additional location work in California, the picture features a studio-lot sequence with director Alfred E. Green appearing as a director and a cameo by comedian Harry Langdon. In 2013 the Library of Congress selected Ella Cinders for the National Film Registry for its cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance.
---
Trivia:
Harry Langdon appears in a studio sequence, one of several self-referential Hollywood cameos woven into the film.
Waite Lifter is revealed to be wealthy football hero George Waite, a parody of University of Illinois star Red Grange.
The release length was seven reels , typical for mid-1920s feature comedies.
Copies of Ella Cinders are preserved at the UCLA Film & Television Archive, the Library of Congress, and the George Eastman Museum.
