Synopsis:
Delightfully Dangerous stars Jane Powell in her first leading film role as Sherry Williams, a high school girl with a deep love for music and a strong admiration for her older sister Joan, whom she believes is a successful Broadway actress. When Joan comes home on a visit, Sherry is shocked to discover that her sister is actually a burlesque performer. Sherry, believing Joan deserves better, attempts to push her into a legitimate career by introducing her to a serious Broadway producer, setting off a series of misadventures and mistaken assumptions that ultimately pave the way for both sisters to find success and fulfillment. With songs, stage numbers, and romantic tension, the film mixes family drama with light-hearted comedy and showbiz satire.
---
Key Themes:
Innocence vs. experience
The glamour and pitfalls of show business
Family loyalty and misunderstandings
Pursuing one's dreams on one's own terms
The fine line between respectability and scandal in mid-century entertainment
---
Notable Musical Numbers:
“Delightfully Dangerous” (title song)
“I’m Always Chasing Rainbows” (originally composed in 1917, reprised here)
“Love Is Where You Find It”
Jane Powell’s performances highlight her classically trained soprano voice, setting her apart from other actresses in similar roles.
---
Trivia:
The film marked Jane Powell’s transition from radio to film stardom; though still a teenager, she was given top billing and launched into Hollywood’s musical A-list.
Louise Beavers, who plays the family's maid and confidant, was a popular African-American actress often cast in supporting roles that added heart and wisdom, despite the racial typecasting of the era.
Director Arthur Lubin, best known for directing Phantom of the Opera (1943) and later the Francis the Talking Mule series, handled this film as a brief departure into musical territory.
The film was produced by Hunt Stromberg, a former MGM executive, under his own independent company after he left the studio system.
Though not a box office hit, Delightfully Dangerous has gained cult appreciation for Powell’s early performance and the charm of its period-appropriate musical sensibilities.
---
Cultural Context:
Released near the end of World War II, Delightfully Dangerous offered escapist entertainment to American audiences. It showcased a younger generation’s optimistic idealism contrasted with the realities of adult responsibility and the blurred lines of morality in performance arts, a topic that was more delicately approached due to the Production Code at the time.
