Summary:
In rural Galicia, Carmiña lives under the watch of her stepfather while the young Martiño quietly loves her. The arrival of Armando Rodríguez, Count of Vindey, draws Carmiña to the city with promises that soon collapse, leaving her abandoned and desperate. Martiño’s steadfast care pulls her back from tragedy, and the count’s remorse forces a reckoning among all three.
The film juxtaposes contemporary melodrama with regional identity, contrasting village bonds and urban temptation. A parallel medieval legend, told in flashback, deepens the theme of honor and injustice before the story returns to a conciliatory ending.

Background:
Directed by the Italian filmmaker Rino Lupo during his Spanish period, the production filmed exteriors in Vigo, Mondariz and other parts of Pontevedra, as well as in Santa Maria da Feira in Portugal; interiors were shot at the Invicta Film studio in Porto. The Filmoteca de Galicia holds 35mm elements and undertook a 4K digitization at 18 fps; credits preserved there also list cinematography by Antonio Vistarini and Manuel Lamartín and production by Hispánica Film Ltda.
---
Trivia:
The Madrid premiere took place on October 28, 1926; a Galician premiere followed in Vigo on February 17, 1927.
For early exhibitions, music arranged by composer Santos Rodríguez Gómez—drawing on Galician winds—was performed under his direction by the choir Queixume dos Pinos.
The film incorporates a medieval-legend subplot told via analepse, including a conflict over the “right of the first night,” echoing themes of power and resistance.
Exteriors were photographed across southern Galicia and northern Portugal, while studio work took place at Invicta Film in Porto, highlighting cross-border production practices of the 1920s.
Filmoteca de Galicia’s preservation work includes a 4K scan at 18 fps, enabling modern screenings from restored 35mm materials.
