Summary:
Across the Mexican border, horse trader Bob Hamlin defends a friend in a cantina shooting and flees the rurales. Drawn back by the music and a local fiesta, he meets Conchita Cortez and is smitten, setting off a pursuit that entangles rival rustlers, suspicious authorities, and loyalties divided by the border.
As Bob tries to clear his name and recover stolen horses, he courts Conchita while navigating dangers from Buck’s gang and the rurales. The film blends early-talkie romance with action, musical interludes, and pre-Code humor, culminating in a showdown and a bid for reconciliation.

Background:
Produced by Tiffany Productions during the transition to sound, Border Romance was released with RCA Photophone audio and also circulated in a silent version for theaters not yet wired for sound. Early trade coverage recorded working titles including Down by the Rio Grande and Song of the Rurales, and noted that the picture featured several songs and bilingual dialogue. A print is preserved at the Library of Congress.
---
Trivia:
Working titles during production included Down by the Rio Grande and Song of the Rurales.
The soundtrack featured new tunes such as Song of the Rurales, The Girl from Topolobombo, Yo te adoro, and My Desert Rose.
Trade reviews in spring 1930 remarked on risqué pre-Code gags, including a river-bathing scene played for comedy.
Reported runtimes vary by source due to differing release versions and reporting, ranging from about 58 to 71 minutes.
The New York State Motion Picture Division indexed the film in 1930 as a dialogue feature from Tiffany Productions.
