Summary:
In Regency England, army officer George Bryan “Beau” Brummel rises from heartbreak to become the arbiter of London fashion and a confidant of the Prince of Wales. His elegance, wit, and ambition win him influence at court even as his romantic entanglements and blunt manner create enemies.
As Brummel’s pride grows, he offends the Prince and loses his protection. Hounded by creditors, he flees to France, where years of exile and poverty lead to a final, poignant encounter that reflects on love, loyalty, and the fleeting nature of status and style.

Background:
The film is adapted from Clyde Fitch’s 1890 stage play and was produced and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures as one of its “Classics of the Screen.” Shooting began in September 1923. The story dramatizes the life of the famed Regency dandy Beau Brummell and follows an earlier 1913 screen version; it would be revisited in 1954 under the restored spelling “Brummell.”
---
Trivia:
The film survives in multiple cuts, including the original 135-minute release and shorter versions around 80 and 71 minutes.
Warner Bros. records report earnings of approximately $453,000 domestic and $42,000 foreign.
Reports from production note that filming began in September 1923.
A 1913 silent feature preceded this adaptation, and a 1954 remake starring Stewart Granger, Elizabeth Taylor, and Peter Ustinov revived the subject.
Contemporary accounts describe complaints from deaf patrons who could lip-read off-color jokes mouthed on set by actors during takes, a hazard unique to silent-era production.
The feature was released as a 10-reel black-and-white silent presented in the standard 1.33:1 ratio.
