This brief actuality captures sharpshooter Annie Oakley demonstrating precision rifle marksmanship in a studio setting. She fires rapidly and breaks tossed targets with practiced accuracy, assisted by a handler who positions and releases the objects.
Beyond its display of skill, the film exemplifies early nonfiction cinema’s fascination with movement and spectacle, presenting a concise record of a famous performer for individual Kinetoscope viewing.

Background:
Filmed at Thomas Edison’s Black Maria studio in West Orange, New Jersey, on November 1, 1894, and issued by the Edison Manufacturing Company in 1895, the film was photographed by William Heise. Surviving documentation lists it among Edison’s early actualities and records a length of about 40 feet, corresponding to roughly 21 seconds at 30 frames per second.
---
Trivia:
The Library of Congress lists the running time as 0:21 at 30 fps and notes no copyright registration.
The production was shot in the Black Maria, Edison’s pioneering film studio designed for Kinetoscope subjects.
Some filmographies credit direction to W. K. L. Dickson, while the Library of Congress credits William Heise as camera.
A similarly titled Annie Oakley short was reissued in March 1900; the AFI Catalog suggests it was likely a rerelease of the earlier footage.
